Vastushastra

Vastu is a very old science and appeared on the world map more than 5,000 years ago. The working of the whole of the universe is based on many many laws of nature which pertain to all fields of life.

The whole of the universe is made up of five elements – earth, water, fire, air and space. Similarly, our body is also made up of these five elements. Although, our body looks in the gross form but in the subtle form, every element has a definite role in the running and maintenance of our physical body. The vedas and other ancient books have described, in detail, about the functions and working of these elements.

The whole universe is part of the nature and its laws. Similarly, our body is also part of nature and its governing laws. Mankind of today is suffering because it is not following the laws of nature governed by these five elements.

Vastu is not only related to architecture and interior design but also explains natural laws as they pertain to built structures and the environment around us. Vastu believes that how we align our physical space in relation to nature. In the ancient times, homes were made only to protect human beings from excess of cold, heat and water. With passage of time, today’s man believes in show business and he gives so much importance to the decoration of the house.

Vastu creates personal spaces that let us unwind and feel at home so that we are away from the worldly affairs and once again we hear our inner voice that speaks gently, softly and we feel close to our true-self.

If we follow vastu and create a house and work place that reflects the perfect balance that exist in the universe, we will re-discover our true connection with the universe and we feel connected with our highest consciousness. Vastu says that frequencies and vibrations of the universe must match (all the time) with the frequencies and vibrations of our house and also our physical bodies. Any imbalance in these frequencies and vibrations creates stress, tension and we feel miserable in our life.
If we see the running of the universe, we don’t find any short comings in its running. The patterns of all the planets, sun, moon, stars, weather, vegetation, etc. is perfect all the time. Since a majority of the people shut out the nature from their homes, all kinds of dis-eases, irregularities, mal-functioning, starts creeping up in the lives of the habitants of the house. The human beings have come from the nature and they have to go back to the nature again. It is a pity that today’s mankind lives his life away from the nature.

If we see the health of the universe, it is in perfect shape. To maintain the health of the physical body, it should be tuned to the health of the universe. Similarly, the health of the house is also very important. One-third of our life is spent staying in the home. We tried to fill up our homes with so many goods and articles, without looking consciously at its health. If you put anything extra in the body, it starts behaving in a different manner. We might feel pain or ache or some dis-ease starts creeping inside the body. Likewise, our homes are also made up of these five elements. When we trespass in the space element of the home, it starts feeling suffocated, depressed and the healthy environment of the home is disturbed. It has a direct or indirect effect on the occupants of the house. Similar is the case of our shops, work places, Godowns, factories, public places, etc.
Vastu is based on the vedic idea that harmony in our lives comes from observing our relationship with every space we inhabit. When we sit on the earth, we get the energy from the earth. Mankind of today sits on the chair and doesn't get the powerful magnetic energy of the earth. We spent so much of our time in the rooms and the effect is that we don't get the natural light of the sun and remain away from the free flowing air. So, we don't get the energy from the light and air. The light and air play such an important role in the running of the physical body, our home and also our surroundings. In other words, before we achieve internal peace, we need to find the external peace. To this end, vastu helps us to re-discover a life of balance and well-being by creating a healthy and soothing environment in our home and also the space around us.

How do we achieve this balance ? We achieve it through vastu's amalgamation of science and spirituality. We show respect to the creator and its creation, i.e. we honour the ancient concept of the five basic elements of space, air, fire, water and earth. If we keep them in harmony, we, in turn, achieve a harmonious relationship with them that brings us peace. We also accept that divinity exist in each and every organism. This includes the divinity of our own true-self.

Originally, vastu was used in city planning, temple for the Gods, palaces, forts and residences for the upper classes. But today's vastu applies to any dwelling, from a palatial home to modest studio apartment, a huge loft, a cabin on a lake, a factory or a office building.

The power of vibrations play an important role in a home or a work place. To demonstrate that interactions with vibrations can be negative or positive, consider experiments that show that plants respond affirmatively to the sound of classical music and behave differently in case of western music. The plants' positive interactions with the vibrations created by the music increased their growth. Or consider how an extremely high-pitched human voice can shatter a crystal glass or hurt our ears. Vibrations clearly have the power to create, preserve or destroy. Understanding this principle is critical to vastu. When we design a space, our goal should be to enhance positive vibrations and shut out negative vibrations. When external vibrations interact with our own, our goal is to have the interactions be harmonized and therefore beneficial to us.
